User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great addition
This product is very useful. It allows me to stand my kindle up and read, I don’t have to hold the book in my hand. It’s great.

4 Stars Just about perfect
I steered away from the Amazon cover for the DX because of the reports of potentially cracking the DX if you opened it wrong. I chose this one because I anticipated I might use the DX as a cookbook and figured a free-standing feature would be useful.

I’m 95% satisfied overall. The quality of the material, inside and out, looks smart and feels good. Construction is great, too. I expect this will hold up over time and age well. I like the hard pockets at the bottom that the kindle sits in. The minimal straps at the top are just fine for keeping the kindle from tilting out and they stay out of the way. This cover definitely adds some weight and heft to the kindle, which is amazingly thin itself.

I’m not completely satisfied at the comfort of this cover while reading/holding the kindle. The strap that secures the cover closed can get in the way, but I’ve learned to tuck it into the folded-back front. It takes a few seconds to do every time you open it up, but keeps it out of the way.

As other reviewers noted, the spine does not fold flat. This creates a wedge shape, which can be helpful if you’re reading the kindle laid on a table since it puts it on an incline, but it’s not ideal if you’re trying to hold the kindle.

The cover is a little less than an inch wider than the DX itself. This extra width extends down the left side of the kindle, giving you a nice area to hold onto the soft cover while reading instead of gripping the kindle itself. I like this and it goes a long way in making up for the bulkiness/heaviness of the cover and the fact that it doesn’t fold completely flat.

The above are the only complaints I can come up with, and they’re certainly not deal breakers. This is a solid, well constructed item and I’m happy with this purchase. It could be a little more comfortable to hold, but that’s an easy tradeoff to using Amazon’s cover and potentially cracking my DX if I accidentally open it wrong. The overall quality and impression of longevity exceeds amazon’s cover.

5 Stars Great quality
I’m very happy with the quality of this cover. It holds my DX perfectly (very snug), has enough protection around, and all the little details are quality. The color and even the white stitching matches my brown Coach Thompson Leather Briefcase perfectly (and fits well in the front).

4 Stars Nice Leather and Better Looking Than Kindle Cover but Not Perfect
When I first bought my Kindle DX, I bought the standard issue Amazon Kindle DX Leather Cover (Fits 9.7″ Display, Latest Generation Kindle DX) and it has been very useful in most regards.

However, I decided I wanted to try the Platform Jacket because the Kindle DX could be set up for hands free reading. In addition, I liked the look of the M-Edge leather better and liked the different colors that were available.

Probably the most important question is which one does a better job protecting the Kindle? I would say it both covers provide comparable protection and neither one is significantly more or less secure than its competitor.

I also have to say that for looks and quality, I believe the M-Edge is a better cover. However, there are definitely things that could be improved to make this a five-star cover:

Advantages of the M-Edge Cover:

——————————–

1. Looks — I love the color and texture of the leather. The leather reminds me of Dooney Bourke AWL purses.

2. Quality and feel of the leather

3. Ability to have the Kindle “support itself” without having to constantly hold it.

Disadvantages of the M-Edge Cover: (things that that Amazon Cover does better)

———————————-

1. The M-Edge strap is located right over port where the power supply would plug in so if you want to charge the Kindle, the cover has to be unstrapped and partially open to plug it in. The Amazon cover can be plugged in regardless of whether the cover is closed or open.

2. The cover doesn’t fold back on itself as neatly as the Amazon Cover which has a softer spine designed to be bent back.

3. The strap that holds the Cover closed gets in the way when the cover is open for reading. It is stiff and doesn’t fold backwards out of the way very comfortably.

4. The M-Edge cover for the DX doesn’t use the hinge system to hold the cover in place and so the elastic straps required to secure the corners of the Kindle are not very “clean” looking. It seems secure enough but still would prefer the hinge locking mechanism.

In the end, I’ll despite the disadvantages of the M-Edge, I’m keeping it and will use it because I really like the ability to stand the Kindle up by itself while reading. However, I hope really hope that someone comes out with a comparable quality cover that uses the actual hinge mechanism that Amazon has devises for the Kindle DX.

2 Stars It’s like this…
I chose this Kindle cover because I read that the other kind may crack your Kindle case. I chose this color because it matches my Coach bag that I will be carrying my Kindle in.

It looks a lot better than it feels. It functions fine. It is not a good value. For about $50.00, I would expect a higher quality product. It really feels like vinyl, for instance. I had to go back and confirm that it is advertised as being “real leather”.

I will keep it, because it appears to be the only option that won’t damage my Kindle, but I am really unimpressed with it.
